Gum Disease

Breath Malodor means unpleasant odor from the mouth when the patient is speaking or breathing out air. In
medical term, it is called Halitosis. A transient breath malodor is noticed when he/she wakes up early in
the morning this occurs in more than half of the adult population and does not deserve any dental
intervention, it occurs because while asleep saliva flow is reduced to a minimum. Morning breath odor
disappears on the intake of food or fluid.

Reasons for Malodor

Gum diseases (Gingivitis, Periodontitis), microbial coatings on tongue, tooth decay are the most common
reasons for breath malodor. Other reasons include ear nose throat infection and gastrointestinal disorders.

Treatment

Treatment involves elimination of the causative factors like cleaning of teeth and gums (scaling & root
planning) use of medicated mouth wash, keeping your tongue clean. If patient complains of dry mouth
drink lot of water and salivary substitute (only after doctor advice).
